Our community lost Donna McCaw this week and we also learned we have a short window to speak up to oppose applications to renew water taking permits in Erin and Puslinch. Efforts to protect water were close to Donna's heart; we hope you will be inspired by her legacy of activism to continue the critical efforts to protect our water. We are in the final days to submit comments on the Official Plans for Wilmot and Wellesley. Waterloo Region is seeking public input, more money and more time for the expansion of the water capacity strategy analysis. With a bit more than a month until the municipal elections, canvassing and meet the candidate events are underway. Please make plans to participate and share information with your networks. It is critical to support local candidates who share our values and are capable of serving our communities well and to help ensure a strong voter turnout. The provincial government is sending mixed messages - their plan for teachers to buy classroom supplies at US-owned Staples is hitting lots of snags while they insist municipalities 'Buy Ontario'. MNR Mike Harris Jr. claims the province spent more in 2026 on fighting forest fires and committed to improve communications. It was also revealed this government's messaging is set to delete after only 30 days. PM Mark Carney's announcements at his federal economic summit, concerns about privatization of airports, while concerns continue about data centres, big oil and climate chaos. 1) Memorial for Donna McCaw

On Thursday we learned the very sad news of the passing of Donna McCaw. Donna was a treasured community leader, teacher and author. She was known for her love of her community of Elora. She was also an activist who was passionate about protecting water. This Sunday, September 20th at 8:00pm there will be a candlelight walk at Bissell Park for those who would like to walk together in silence to remember Donna. A memorial is also planned on October 5th at the Elora Centre for the Arts. More details are to follow. Donations in her memory can be made to the Centre Wellington Community Foundation:

2) Water-taking horrors return to Erin and Puslinch

Ice River Springs, through its subsidiary White Wolf Property Management Inc., is hoping to renew the permits that allow groundwater to be taken for bottled water operations at the former Nestlé and Blue Triton sites in Erin and Puslinch. 
Just under a year ago, as a result of the province weakening the rules, permits at these sites were renewed and transferred from BlueTriton to White Wolf with no public notice, no opportunity for community input, and no consultation with Indigenous communities. Now, these permits are up for renewal. We have an opportunity to stop them.

It is important to remind the decision-makers that most of the people who live in the communities in the Grand River Watershed rely on groundwater, and some are already facing crises of insufficient water capacity. With growth and development the situation will continue to deteriorate. It is crutical to protect our water. Life-sustaining water should not ever be treated as a commodity.

Also note that the permit renewal requests include a reduction in permitted water taking, from 3.6 million to 986,400 litres per day. Water Watchers indicated this does not change anything, as this is the average amount Nestlé was taking daily - it is an attempt to shift the optics.

3) Final Days to Speak Up On ERO about Official Plans for Wilmot and Wellesley;

Wilmot and Wellesley Official Plans Posted To The Environmental Registry Of Ontario (ERO) - Both Wilmot Township and Wellesley Township have had their recently approved Official Plans posted to the ERO.  This presents us with an important opportunity to speak up and share concerns about the Wilmot Official Plan. This is not a strong enough, nor sufficient plan for the scale of the challenges to be faced in the future. 

Speak up and ensure your concerns are on the public record before 11:59m on September 19th.

Woolwich Official Plan Statutory Planning Public Meeting Woolwich Township has just held an Open House and announced a statutory public meeting for their excellent and visionary Official Plan.  We need to ensure that the Countryside Line concept is returned to their Official Plan, otherwise this is an excellent document that will serve these communities well and is a model Official Plan for others with strong climate change action, farmland protection, environmental initiatives and more.

4) Waterloo Water Crisis Update

It appears Waterloo Region will need to spend additional funds to update the scope of analysis for the water supply strategy update. Public consultation is to begin this fall. The new target for completion of the water supply strategy update is spring 2028.

12) Devil's Creek Development Concerns

It is encouraging to see fantastic grassroots community organizing to oppose development at Devil's Creek continuing with new Facebook posts:There is a proposal to try to force 30 townhouses into a property that even the developer acknowledges is so environmentally sensitive that at least three-quarters of the site can't even be developed and must be protected. We need to ensure that entire natural areas are protected - not just some parts. A petition is online and you can learn more at the links below:

Action Required - Speak up and help to ensure this important part of Cambridge is protected and that new town houses are built in a better location without such environmental impact and threatening water aquifers.
