There are just a few days remaining to speak up to oppose renewals for water-taking permits to continue water bottling operations in Puslinch and Erin. And with just over one month to go before the municipal election day, it’s more critical than ever that we do our best to help ensure a strong voter turnout, to carefully choose and fully support the local candidates who share our values and are capable of serving our communities well. Many are raising concerns about the new federal omnibus Bill C-39 that proposes sweeping changes aimed at streamlining major projects. Awareness continues to grow about the Martin Grove Gateway and Devil's Creek development proposals. The search for solutions continues for the Waterloo water crisis. There is also something to celebrate: the OLT issued a decision to deny an application to develop land in Ancaster protected by the Greenbelt!

1) Urgent: Water bottling concerns

Applications to renew the water-taking permits to continue the bottled water operations at the former Nestlé and Blue Triton sites in Erin and Puslinch have been submitted by Ice River Springs, through its subsidiary White Wolf Property Management Inc.

The public consultation period is currently open for comments. There are two postings to the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) - The consultations close at 11:59 p.m. on September 27, 2026

3) Woolwich Statutory Official Plan Meeting

Woolwich Township is planning a statutory public meeting for their excellent visionary Official Plan.  We do need to ensure that the Countryside Line concept is returned to their Official Plan, otherwise this is an excellent document that will serve these communities well. It is a model Official Plan for others with strong climate change action, farmland protection, environmental initiatives and more. Note:  there will be no formal decision at this meeting - this will fall to the new Council later this year.

4) Municipal Election News

With just over a month remaining for municipal election campaigns we need to continue to pay attention and participate in upcoming events and support local candidates. Let's do our best to inform ourselves and our communities and help ensure that people are elected who share our values and are capable of serving our communities well. A strong voter turnout for the upcoming municipal elections is very important. There's lots of room for improvement over recent municipal elections (Province-wide average voter turnout for for 2022 was 33%, for 2018 was 38%). Find a local group and events and get involved!

In the midst of this 2026 municipal election campaign, Pierre Poilievre, federal CPC leader made an appearance at an event in Brantford and announced the appointment of the current Mayor of Brantford as the CPC candidate for the federal by-election in Brantford-Brant South (to replace recently resigned MP Larry Brock). The date for this federal byelection has not yet been announced. This event attracted considerable media attention. The presence of some current mayoral candidates - from both City of Brantford and County of Brant - was noted at this partisan event, they are visible in the CTV video, and mentioned in the Expositor and CP24 articles.

5) Waterloo Water Crisis Update

It appears Waterloo Region will need to spend additional funds to update the scope of analysis for the water supply strategy update. Public consultation is to begin this fall. The new target for completion of the water supply strategy update is spring 2028.

8) A win at the OLT for Hamilton

It is great to be able to highlight some good news! A recent Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) decision rejected a developers' appeal to advance a plan to expand Hamilton's urban area for residential development plan for 75 homes in a section of the Greenbelt in Ancaster.

After the federal government's introduction of the sweeping omnibus Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, Environmental Defence wasted no time issuing a release with their response:

Transport Minister and Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon introduced Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, in Parliament on Sept. 21. The nearly 250-page omnibus bill will entrench new powers to bypass normal government approval processes for projects like pipelines, highways and nuclear facilities, by removing a five-year time limit that was built into last year’s Building Canada Act.

11) Devil's Creek Development Concerns

It is encouraging to see fantastic grassroots community organizing to oppose development at Devil's Creek continuing. There is a proposal to try to force 30 townhouses into a property that even the developer acknowledges is so environmentally sensitive that at least three-quarters of the site can't even be developed and must be protected. We need to ensure that entire natural areas are protected - not just some parts. There is an online petition. Learn more at the links below:

Action Required - Speak up and help to ensure this important part of Cambridge is protected and that new housing is built in a better location without threatening water aquifers or other significant environmental impacts.
