Good Day!

The October 26th municipal elections are rapidly approaching with advance voting already underway in many municipalities - lots of election information and details are below.

Doug Ford has begun the very concerning bike lane removals in parts of Toronto to large protests and citizen action including police even arresting people in wheelchairs. The police presence has been significant with more than 30 police cars and a huge army of officers to escort construction crews in a colossal waste of resources and taxpayer money.

In a shocking announcement Ontario has committed to buy dirty, expensive, oil-fired US electricity to make up for bad planning and electricity shortfalls as our nuclear and gas plants can't meet demand this winter. So much for cutting off exports to the US...

The Ontario Place battle is heard before the Supreme Court of Canada and the RCMP Greenbelt investigation continues.

Sign up for Dr. Hugh Simpson's Understanding Groundwater presentation on October 27th and join us tonight, Friday October 16th at 5:30pm Eastern to discuss all this and more:

1) Municipal Elections 2026

Advance voting has already begun, or will begin shortly in some municipalities with the official election day - October 26th - rapidly approaching. There is a wide variety of ways to vote across the Grand River Watershed for the 2026 municipal elections; in some municipalities traditional voting methods, in other municipalities in-person voting is no longer available - voting is only by mail, or only online and by phone. Please be sure to check the voting information for your local municipality (see list of websites below) to find out when, where, and how to vote. All municipalities offer assistance with voting. Contact your local municipality if you have any questions.

Voter Turnout

The graph below shows voter turnout across our region for the 2018 and 2022 municipal elections. It is worth noting that the highest turnout for any municipality was only 42.73% (Wellington North in 2018), and turnout decreased in 2022 for almost all municipalities with the exceptions of Wilmot and Woolwich. North Dumfries had the lowest turnout - just 18.51% in 2022. Yikes! There is definitely a lot of room for improvement.

When you make your plans to vote, we encourage you to have conversations with people in your network, and if possible offer neighbours and family assistance, especially in municipalities where the voting system has changed.

Are you registered to vote?

Check here:

If you need to register to vote or update your details, contact your municipality. Voting registration can be done right up to election day, October 26th. Find the contact info here:

2) Ontario To Import Dirty US Electricity To Address Energy Shortfalls

In a confounding move just weeks after Doug Ford threatened to cut off exports of electricity to the United States, the provincial electricity system operator has signed a massive deal to import dirty oil and gas fired electricity from New York to make up for shortages, out of commission nuclear plants, and Ontario gas plants that can't secure enough fuel in cold weather. So much for buy Canadian....

Doug Ford should have regrets about cancelling so many clean, green energy projects - wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in the process. While the rest of the world enjoys power generated from abundant, free sunshine and wind, deploying record amounts of clean energy, due to Ford's disastrous choices, Ontario is going to be dependent on costly US electricity this winter.

The Waterloo Region Record - After Doug Ford's Threats To Cut Power To States, Ontario Set To Import US Electricity This Winter:

The Waterloo Region Record - Buy Canadian? Why Does The Province Keep Handing US Companies Contracts?:

Elbows Up For Canada - Former Member of Parliament Charlie Angus doesn't mince words when he claims that Canada needs to truly understand how real the threats being made by the United States are, and how we need to rapidly develop independence and the ability to stand strong for what we believe in. He's also quick to point out how quickly "Captain Canada" Doug Ford has capitulated and backed down any time he has been threatened and how far too much is still being outsourced, purchased from, and dependent on America:

Action Required - Understand the magnitude of the threats being issued by the United States, demand that Ontario gets the clean, reliable, green, independent energy we need, and stand strong for our country and values!

3) Bike Lane Removals Start Despite Protests and Arrests

The Ford government brought in a very heavy police presence the second day of large protests against the absurd removal of bike lanes in Toronto. Kudos to the many citizens and cyclists taking action to demand safe roads and routes for active transportation. On the third day of protests, once again there was the heavy police presence, another arrest was made. This is an astonishing waste of resources - for what purpose?

CityNews - Person in wheelchair arrested at protest as bike lane removal work underway in Etobicoke:

Please watch the video of the arrest of the person who was in a wheelchair:

She is a paralympian swimmer.

Aly Van Wyck-Smart: ‘Her meteoric rise to fame came quickly when she won a Silver medal at the 2019 Para World Swimming Championships in the S2-100m backstroke & a bronze 50m. With those results she quickly moved the target from Paris 2024 to Tokyo 2020.’

Lanrick Bennett

Ford should not be able to brush this off. Ontario should not accept this.

5) Oppose The GRCA Sale Of Niska Conservation Lands - Comment Deadline October 18th

The GRCA is moving to sell of 8 ha of conservation land in Guelph that was acquired in 1977 at the request of the City of Guelph to serve as parkland and conservation land in perpetuity.  The archival record unequivocally documents this fact, however, the GRCA concocted a false narrative that the land was acquired for flood control, and is therefore no longer needed.

Please register your opposition to this sale.

Consultation on this disposition has taken place over a 45-day period with comments due by 4:30 p.m. on October 18, 2026.

Comments should be provided by e-mail to: property@grandriver.ca.

Action Required - Speak up to ensure conservation land holdings are increasing - not decreasing.

6) Greenbelt RCMP Investigation

More media outlets are reporting on extreme length of the RCMP investigation  into Doug Ford and the Conservative provincial government's actions on trying to carve up and sell off the Greenbelt to well-connected developers in a multi-billion dollar scandal.  The RCMP state that they have "no updates at this time and that the investigation is ongoing." A former Ontario attorney general has stated the Mounties should properly update the public on the status of the probe.

The Waterloo Region Record - Three years later, RCMP says investigation into Doug Ford's Greenbelt Scandal is still ‘ongoing’:

The Trillium - ‘It’s unfair’: Silence and uncertainty define RCMP’s Greenbelt investigation at 3-year mark:

Action Required - Keep speaking up and demanding answers about this investigation into the egregious attempt to sell off the Greenbelt.

7) Waterloo Water Crisis Update

The Region of Waterloo has successfully brought the first side-stream filtration unit online with three more units to connect in the coming months, helping to address some of the water shortage in the Mannheim Service Area of Waterloo Region.  However, issues have arisen at the Greenbrook Water Treatment Plant that will require significant repairs.

The Region feels that it can meet about 80% of the anticipated demand for tens of thousands of new residents by 2031 and there is agreement with the development community that we have enough water within our region to address our needs for at least the next 30 years or at least to 2051, which is fantastic since it negates the need for any sort of unsustainable and unaffordable Great Lakes pipeline for decades.

8) More Ford Provincial Scandals

The scandals and costly choices of the Ford government continue.  In addition to the healthcare, OSAP and the Skills Development Fund scandals costing tens of millions of dollars, there are some new findings about who the provincially appointed Toronto District School Board supervisor is meeting with, a concerning study hidden about online gambling and some consequences for the business leader who accused the Premier’s office of using leverage to get favourable media pre-election media coverage. And let's not forget about the Greenbelt scandal :

The Trillium - Postmedia ex-CEO alleges Doug Ford’s office used ‘leverage’ over son’s company to get newspaper chain to publish pre-election letter:

The consequences of making this allegation did not take long.

12) Good News - EV Sales Grow 55%

It is great to see the news that electric vehicle sales continues to grow in Canada with sales this past August increasing 55% over the previous August. Of course gas and diesel fuel nearing record highs only helps to highlight the significant cost savings and benefits of EVs. Unfortunately, sales are not growing fast enough to meet federal goals for phasing out gasoline powered vehicles but things are certainly trending in the right direction in Canada and around the globe:
